At the Latin Quarter, we believe that much of lifes beauty comes from the things that our human hands can produce. That is why, on principle, we seek out only the most skilled artisans and provide our customers with only the highest quality of handmade goods.
Because we are adamant on providing our customers with only the highest quality of goods and because we know that an artisans own story adds to the richness and profundity of each piece we offer, we only purchase itemsranging from ceramics, dining room tables, and glass vases directly from artisans.
On foot, we have ventured in to the outdoor markets and small artisan communities of many Latin American regions, including south and central Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.
As we carefully look for the most unique and high quality goods to bring to The Latin Quarter, we have developed friendships with craftspeople and artisans from such famous artisan communities as Metepec (meh-tay-pek), Tonala (tone-nay-LAH), Tlaquepaque (tla-kay-pah-kay), Oaxaca, and Chiapa de Corzo.
At the Latin Quarter, we are proud that our relationships with unique and skilled artisans have allowed us to offer the most unique selection of high-quality Latin American goods in the Southeastern United States.
Our artisan friends from San Telmo, Argentina have shared with us their long tradition of sipping afternoon teas together by passing around a lacquer-painted gourd, called a mate (mah-tay), often ornamented in delicate silverwork, stuffed with yerba mate leaves, steeped in hot water, and filtered through a beautifully crafted straw called a bombilla (bom-bi-ya). We have found that along with the tradition of togetherness that they represent, the mates also make for a beautiful adornment to any fireplace or showcase.
We also invite people from the community to come to The Latin Quarter to view the breathtaking artwork of some of Mexicos most talented women. We believe that the daring, intimate, and colorful paintings of Hortensia Bueno and Diana Olvera can invigorate any home with the Latin American passion and playfulness they convey.
From the artisans of Tlaquepaque, Mexico, we believe that we have discovered glass and pewterware to compliment the dining rooms of any home. Through years of experience, the artisans there have created kitchenware that is not only aesthetically profound, but also highly functional. We hope that these goods from the Latin Quarter will become your very own family favorites.
At the Latin Quarter, we are also proud to offer a broad assortment of pottery from the world-famous potters community of San Bartolo Coyotepec in Southern Mexico. This pottery, called barro negro or black clay, was first conceived of by Doña Rosa, an indigenous woman of the Zapotec people in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Doña Rosa has gained her global recognition for her experimentation with the finishes of her pots and her family still guards the secret of how they create masterful pots with brilliant black shines.
Finally, allow us to introduce you to the distinguished lacquerware of the artisan community of Olinala in Mexicos northwestern state of Guerrero. The hand-painted gourds of Olinala grow as fruit on the jicaras and the chests are crafted from the perfumed wood aloe trees lining the community. In past times, these large lacquerware chests were used in homes to store clothing, leaving the clothing nicely scented from the woods natural fragrance. We feel confident that either of these items could serve as centerpieces in any craft-loving home.
